How destination cost comparison works

The apples-to-apples principle

Destination costs only mean something when the trip itself is held constant. This tool fixes the variables that inflate or deflate comparisons — nights, travel style, party size — and varies only the destination. A mid-range week for two in Japan and a mid-range week for two in Thailand differ only because Japan's hotels, meals and activities cost more, not because the trips are shaped differently. Rooms are shared two per room, visas are charged once per traveler, and every destination is priced with the same model that powers our Trip Planner.

What drives the spread between countries

Three levers dominate. Lodging is the biggest — mid-range hotel prices vary more than 10× between the cheapest and priciest countries in our dataset, and the luxury multiplier (×2.2) widens every gap. Food is second at roughly 3 meals a day per person. Visa fees are the quiet third: a family of four can add $600+ before landing in visa-heavy regions, while visa-free destinations add nothing. The Best Value badge simply finds the destination where those three levers stack lowest — but read the best-months row before committing, because a cheap monsoon season is not a bargain.

Using the comparison to plan

The pattern most travelers settle into: compare two or three candidates at the same trip shape, take the winner's total as the budget ceiling, then break that ceiling into a real itinerary with the Trip Planner — which adds the flights between stops and prices multi-country routes. Share a comparison with travel partners via the Copy link button (it encodes your exact selections in the URL) and re-run it whenever a fare sale or shoulder-season discount changes the math. All figures are indicative 2025/26 bands drawn from the same country dataset behind our 6,000+ calculators.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the destination comparison work?
Pick up to three countries, your trip length and travel style. Every destination is priced with the same model — hotels, meals, activities and visa fees scaled to your style — so the only variable is the destination itself. The cheapest option earns the Best Value badge.
Are the costs per person or per group?
Both are shown. Each card displays a per-person per-day figure (total cost divided by nights and travelers) and the full trip total for your whole party. Hotel rooms are shared two travelers per room, so solo travelers pay proportionally more per person.
Do the totals include flights?
No — the comparison is destination-only (lodging, food, activities, visa) so the destinations are compared on equal footing. Flight costs depend on your origin; use the Trip Planner for full door-to-door itineraries including flights between stops.
What travel styles can I compare?
Three: Budget (hostels, street food, free sights), Mid-range (3–4★ hotels, casual restaurants) and Luxury (5★ stays, fine dining, private tours). The style multipliers are shared with our Trip Planner so both tools agree on pricing.
Can I share my comparison?
Yes — the Copy link button produces a shareable URL that encodes your exact destinations, nights, style and party size. Anyone opening it sees your comparison load instantly, no sign-up needed.
