Methodology

How the trip cost estimate works

Planning a trip across several countries is where most budgets go sideways — flights stack up, visa fees surprise you at borders, and a week in Switzerland can cost what a month in Vietnam does. The Trip Planner prices a whole itinerary at once using the same country cost dataset behind tripcalc.io's travel budget calculators, so nothing slips through the cracks.

Every estimate is built bottom-up from per-country averages: a mid-range hotel night and a mid-range restaurant meal, converted to USD. Your travel style scales those numbers — budget travelers pay roughly a third for lodging and just over half for food, luxury travelers about double — and two travelers share one room. Activities run $15, $40 or $120 per person per day by style. Visa fees apply once per country per trip, and flights use a flat model: $120 per person between stops on the same continent, $550 across continents. The result is a transparent, adjustable estimate — not a black box.

Travel styles

Choosing your travel style

Style is the biggest lever on your total — often bigger than the destinations themselves. Budget style doesn't mean uncomfortable: it means guesthouses, street food and free sights, which across much of Asia is genuinely the best way to travel. Mid-range buys three-to-four-star hotels, proper restaurants and paid attractions most days. Luxury assumes five-star properties, fine dining and private tours. A useful trick is mixing styles: go budget in expensive countries where the basics are still excellent, and splash out where luxury is affordable — a five-star night in Bangkok can cost less than a hostel bunk in Zurich.

Expert tips

Budgeting tips for multi-destination trips

Every destination you add carries fixed costs — a flight, often a visa — so fewer, longer stops usually beat a whirlwind tour. Cluster countries within one continent to keep inter-city flights near the $120 mark instead of $550, and add a 10–15% contingency on top of any estimate for delays, illness or the tour you didn't know existed. Book the expensive, inflexible legs first (long-haul flights, peak-season hotels) and leave the cheap ones flexible. And check visa rules for your nationality early — a refused application costs more than money.

Daily spend depends far more on where you go than how long you travel. In Southeast Asia a mid-range traveler averages $60–100 per day, in Western Europe $180–260, and in Japan or Australia $150–220. The planner models each destination separately using local hotel and meal averages, so a Thailand-plus-France itinerary is priced realistically rather than off a single blended rate.

The planner uses a simple, transparent rule: $120 per person when consecutive stops are on the same continent (Tokyo to Bangkok, Madrid to Rome) and $550 per person when the trip crosses continents (New York to Tokyo, Dubai to Paris). These sit near typical economy fares including taxes and bags. Compare against real quotes once your dates firm up, especially for peak season.

Each country's visa fee is charged once per trip, multiplied by the number of travelers — returning to a country you already visited doesn't trigger a second fee. The figure is a typical tourist visa or eVisa cost; what you actually pay depends on your nationality, so confirm requirements on the destination's official immigration site before booking.

Budget style assumes hostels or guesthouses (35% of mid-range lodging cost), casual street-food meals (55% of restaurant prices) and about $15 per day of activities. Mid-range uses the dataset's hotel and meal averages with $40 per day of activities. Luxury scales lodging to 2.2× and food to 1.8×, with roughly $120 per day of activities.

Lengthen stays and cut stops — every extra destination adds a flight plus fixed visa costs. Cluster countries within one continent so inter-city legs stay near the $120 estimate instead of $550, mix styles by going budget in expensive regions, and travel in shoulder season when hotel prices often drop 20–40%. Overland trains and buses between neighboring countries frequently beat short-haul fares.
