KLM (KL) Baggage Allowance Calculator

KLM permits one carry-on bag weighing up to 12 kg with maximum dimensions of 55×35×25 cm (length × width × height). The 12 kg carry-on weight limit on KLM is enforced at check-in and at the gate — leave a little room for purchases.

In addition to the main carry-on, KLM allows one personal item under the seat — the usual place for valuables, electronics and medications.

The checked allowance on KLM is 23 kg per standard bag — bag-inclusive fares are one of this carrier's quiet value levers. Additional bags cost $55 USD each on KLM; bag dimensions should total no more than 158 cm (62 in) linear — most standard suitcases comply.

KLM includes the first checked bag — a differentiator on longer trips. Overweight pricing runs $10/kg past 23 kg either way.

Two fee lines dominate a KLM excess bill: $55 for each additional checked bag and $10 per kilogram above 23 kg. Compare strategies before paying: a second 18 kg bag at $55 often beats $10/kg overweight on one heavy case — the calculator tests both configurations for KLM (KL).

Repack before you pay: splitting weight across two bags at $55 each frequently undercuts overweight fees on KLM, and online pre-booking undercuts the counter by 40–60%.

Skis, golf clubs and bikes count as ordinary checked bags on KLM up to 23 kg; oversize items above 158 cm linear may incur a flat $75–150 surcharge. Instruments under 8 kg and within carry-on dimensions may travel in the KLM cabin; larger instruments need either a bought seat or checked handling — KLM recommends hard-shell cases and a declaration at check-in.

Assistive devices are always free on KLM (KL): wheelchairs, scooters and walkers are accepted at the gate and returned aircraft-side wherever feasible.
